Case Reports in Dentistry , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/618468
Abstract: KID syndrome is a rare genodermatosis characterized by keratitis, ichthyosis, and sensorineural deafness. Although the dermatological, ophthalmologic, and sensorineural defects are emphasized in the literature, oral and dental evaluations are so superficial. In this case report, dental and oral symptoms of a three year and five months old boy with KID syndrome, suffering severe Early Childhood Caries (s-ECC) and dental treatments done under General Anesthesia (GA) were reported. 1. Introduction Keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome is congenital ectodermal disorder without a clear mode of inheritance and is characterized by erythrokeratoderma, sensorineural hearing loss, and vascularizing keratitis [1–5]. KID syndrome is usually associated with less severe keratoderma and a milder hearing problem, but the eye involvement (keratitis) may eventually lead to impaired vision [3]. Keratitis is rather a late finding and may not sometimes be seen [6]. The cause of KID syndrome was identified as a germline missense mutation in the GJB2 (gap junctionβ-2) gene encoding for connexin-26, which is essential for gap function formation in various tissues [7, 8]. Mutations in the GJB2 gene encoding connexin 26 are detrimental to function of cochlea, palmoplantar epidermis, hair follicles, corneal epithelium, and sweat glands and ducts, causing nonsyndromic sensorineural deafness, palmoplantar keratoderma and hearing impairment, Vohwinkel syndrome, and KID syndrome [8–11]. The first component required for diagnosis is characteristic skin findings which are usually present at birth or in early infancy. The well-demarcated, erythematous, hyperkeratotic plaques with verrucous surface are distributed over face and extremities alternating with smoother areas [3]. Hyperkeratotic plaques over the face give patients an appearance of premature aging [12]. The second one is presence of sensorineural hearing loss. The third component is ophthalmologic defects, which can progress total blindness [13]. Most patients have sparse or absent scalp hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes [3]. Nails may be thickened, deformed, brittle, white, hypoplastic, or normal. In some patients teeth are normally developed, but in others they may be defective and they are likely to develop caries [3, 14–17]. However, oral mucosa, status of the primary teeth and development of permanent teeth of the children with KID syndrome, and treatment approaches for those children have not been investigated so far. Here, we report the dental restorative treatments provided for a three-year and five-month-old
Evaluation of Teachers’ Opinions on Aiming to Upskill the Primary School Students with the Life Skills in Science Curriculum

- , 2018,
Abstract: In science curriculum life skills have been defined as the basic skills for accessing scientific knowledge and using scientific knowledge. These skills are defined as analytical thinking, decision making, creative thinking, entrepreneurship, communication and teamwork. The aim of this study is to examine the opinions of the classroom teachers regarding the upskilling life skills involved in the science program to the primary school students. Phenomenological research design was used in this study. Interviews were held with nine classroom teachers determined by the criteria sampling method. The data were subjected to content analysis. Most of the teachers who participated in the research indicated that, the science course contributed to the development of life skills. Teachers said that in order to be able to develop these skills, they mostly used student cantered method-techniques. Teachers ventilated that, they observed the progress of these skills through observations, written exams, and behaviours during the course and project work. Teachers have said that the families and school administration are influential on the development of these skills. In order to increase the contribution of the science course to the development of life skills, various teaching materials and activities suitable for the age group might be prepared and in-service trainings might be organised
Does Reimplantation of Inferior Mesenteric Artery Have a Role in Preventing Colonic Ischemia Developing After Surgery of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?

Ko?uyolu Kalp Dergisi , 2012,
Abstract: Introduction: Ischemia of sigmoid colon following surgery of abdominal aortic aneurysm is a rare and a devastating complication. Either ligation or embolisation of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) or internal iliac artery can be accounted for this. However abundance of collateral flow to the sigmoid colon usually prevents ischemia. Materials and Methods: Seventy five patients that had surgery of infrarenal abdominal aneurysm in Gulhane Military Medical Academy and Private Medicana Hospital between years1991-2010 were followed postoperatively. Group I consists of 31 patients operated and having not IMA reimplantation between 1991 and 1999. Group II consists of 44 patients operated and reimplantated IMA between 1999 and 2010. Results: Early mortality was seen in group I as one death due to peritonitis developed following bowel perforation at 18th hours. Early mortality was not seen in group II. Late mortality was only a death due to myocardial infarction at 18th month in goup II. As a result of comparison, significant improvement in bowel sounds, bowel motility, hospitalization duration and also time to mobilization in group II. Conclusion: Whereas the ligation of chronically occluded IMA far away from aneurysm can result in obliteration of collaterals of superior mesenteric arteries, the abundance of collateral flow to the sigmoid colon usually prevents ischemia. In the conclusion we recommend the reimplantation of IMA to prevent ischemia of colon.Key Words: Aortic aneurysm, abdominal; mesenteric arteries; mesenteric artery, inferior; replantation.

Turk Pediatri Ar?ivi , 2012,
Abstract: Lightning is one of the reasons for death due to environmental disasters. Lightning-related deaths occur rarely in Sivas. This study aims to make the medico-legal evaluation of rare specific findings can be observed on clothings and during autopsy in a small part of the subjects who died due to stroke of lightning. A five-year-old boy who resided in his father’s farm was exposed to lightning on an open field. Resuscitation failed and he was reported to be dead when he arrived at the hospital. Postmortem investigation revealed extensive burnt areas on his clothes and body. In suspicous deaths occurring on open fields, lightning should be taken into consideration as a possible cause of death. Detailed external and internal examination should be carried out along with careful crime scene investigation. It is important to determine and evaluate the characteristic findings of lightning. Carcasses of animals and damages in the trunks of trees found in surrounding area should not be overlooked, since they may give some clues to establish a link between lightning and death. Abstract: Endothelial dysfunction, secondary to systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, is known to play a major role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis. It is hypothesized that the lower incidence of coronary artery disease in the premenopausal period in females when compared with males is associated with regular menstrual blood loss. We investigated whether regular blood donation (BD) is associated with improved endothelial function in healthy adult males

Abstract: Soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 (sST2), a member of the interleukin 1 receptor family, is increased in mechanical stress conditions and is produced by cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. Elevated sST2 level is associated with the prognosis of acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and acute and chronic heart failure (HF). In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between sST2 levels and cardiovascular mortality in outpatients with HF

Sociology Mind (SM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2014.43021
Abstract:
This study includes a research on the impacts of core employees on the perceived performances of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s). Employees, who are working at manufacturing department or basic function, were taken as core employees in the frame of the research. This research was conducted at the Middle and Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey; at 60 SME’s. The research was realised on the bases of the resource-based view of the firm; the relation between the characteristics of core employees as rareness, hardness to imitation and the perceived performances of SME’s were given. This study contributes to the literature for its regional focus to the topic and for the presentation of how SME’s perceive organizational performance as dimensional context. The results of the research didn’t support the hypothesis which claims that there is a positive relationship between the expertises of core employees, whose superior characteristics are specific to firms and the organizational performance.
